Predator And Pest Defence

Chickens are highly susceptible to predators. Foxes, badgers, Ferrets, rats, domestic pets and birds of prey can all pose a threat, especially to a free-range flock.

But it’s a misconception to think only animals that pose a threat! Unscrupulous humans will break in and physically take your birds and as the cost of living continues to increase beyond belief, I expect to see this become more of a problem.

To protect your chickens from predators, you'll need to consider all the options available.

A game changer is solar power, no matter how remote your chickens are housed, you'll find a solution in this section to protect and monitor your chicken’s day and night...24/7.

A CCTV system is a must for chicken keepers. In the world of backyard chicken keeping, keeping your hens safe and thriving is a top priority. Enter the CCTV camera – your feathered friends' 24/7 guardian. Here's why they're essential:

• Keep an eye on your flock from anywhere, providing remote peace of mind

• CCTV footage aids in investigating incidents like theft or unauthorised entry

• Early detection of illnesses to keep your chickens healthy and happy.

• CCTV can also be a good indicator if your chickens have mites

• Monitor nesting areas for insights into egg-laying patterns and production.

• Monitor nesting areas for insights into egg-laying patterns and production

• Understand your chicken’s habits and behaviours for optimal care

Investing in CCTV isn't just about security; it's a shrewd decision to keep your chickens happy, healthy, and thriving!

Electric poultry fencing is a good addition on the outside of your run to protect against larger ground predators, but the layout will determine if it will deter smaller predators such as weasels and ferrets…and humans are an altogether different proposition. Netting is good but if you are going to use polywire try to make the gap between the bottom three wires narrower to target the smaller predators. Some will say 3 wires is sufficient, but 5 is much safer.

Ultrasonic devices work, but you must constantly rotate them so the predator thinks they are moving around the garden/run.

Birds of prey are a different proposition, especially if your free ranging near moorland. But if your chickens are kept in the relevant safety of a run, an overhead net is a good solution, but make sure that you have shiny objects attached so that it can be seen. Otherwise, a big bird might destroy the net if its focusing solely on its target and injure its self in the attempt.

Rats, what can one say? Everybody has a problem with rats, even if you don’t realise it!
